- For convenience and saving money, think about purchasing a Daypass. This offers unlimited travel on all road buses, the SkyTrain and SeaBus.
- Be cautious when traveling at night to the Eastside of Downtown. Out-of-town cars are high targets for theft.

Travel Tips:
- Not all beaches are safe for swimming because of riptides, so be sure to check with someone at the hotel to find out where to go.
- Don’t swim in areas of the ocean where rivers pour in from a main town. Those rivers are more than likely polluted.
- You’ll want to have bug spray… especially for mosquitoes. If you don’t bring some, many local stores do sell it.
- Avoid uncooked foods, milk and any drink with ice.
- Buy organic. Sprays banned in most countries are used here.
- Before you go, the Center for Disease Control recommends getting vaccines for hepatitis A and typhoid fever… especially when traveling to remote areas or staying for more than six weeks.

- Permits are required before taking photos of certain sites.
- Check on the fighting conditions, in the northern part of Sri Lanka, between the military and the Tamil Tigers.
- The 10% service charge that’s added to food and lodging bills goes to the owner, so additional tipping for the person providing the service is appreciated.
- Drivers expect a 10% tip, and hotel staff expects a tip of 10 to 20 rupees (Sri Lankan currency).
- For the best exchange rates, change rupees back into US dollars before you leave. You can also find moneychangers with competitive rates in major cities, and they generally don’t charge a commission.
