To avoid crowds, the best time to visit is between November and February.

Plan ahead for lodging, camping, backcountry permits, mule trips and other activities.

Permits are required for overnight hiking and camping outside designated areas. Permits are limited and can be purchased, up to four months in advance, from the Backcountry Information Center.

In order to fish in the park, a license will need to be purchased at the Canyon Village Marketplace. The best time to fish is in the fall and winter.

Although January through the first part of April is the hottest time of the year, the water is a little chiller due to the Humboldt Current.

May through December the water is the warmest, and the forest is green and tropical.

It is very dry from December – May, which means tourism is high (the trees also loose there leaves).

The hospital is about 35 minutes away from the lodge (clinic 20 min.)
